I think I used to like winter, but it has been so long ago that I have forgotten it, because I don't much care for it now! I do remember that a stormy day was a good day to bake and fill the deepfreeze with glazed doughnuts, cookies, and bread. I don't do that anymore because I ate/eat too much of the bounty.
When I started to grade school, at District 127 in Cherry County, we rode our horses to school. It was about 4 miles, and didn't take long. We rode double in the winter because, supposedly, we stayed warmer. I'd get dressed with my long socks, my jeans, a dress on top, and my chaps over the jeans. This was all before the coat, hat, and mittens were added. Alleah Riley told how they used newspapers to wrap around their arms and body, but we didn't do that. Our coats were good, but we didn't have sweat shirts or long underwear. We wore cowboy boots with overshoes. I rode behind the saddle because I was the youngest, and I remember well that I had a gap!!! On the inside of the upper part of my legs, there was a section above the chaps that was covered only by my jeans and it would rub on the saddle and get raw!! I mean RAW! I don't remember it bothering in the summer, but it really chapped in the winter. (that's how I learned the true meaning of chaps) It is a wonder that I was not permanently bowlegged, 'cause I certainly learned to walk like that. Before we left, we ate a good breakfast...oatmeal. Dad said it would stick to our ribs. I thought it was terrible, and it was years before I learned to like it.
